At an early age Raj began his musical education by hearing music like the Beatles, the Doors and traditional Indian music from his parents' record player. His training in musical instruments started with private lessons in harmonium and tabla. During elementary and middle school Raj participated in the orchestra and band programs, playing violin, trumpet and tuba.
Raj's interests lead him to study drums, bass and guitar. He took it upon himself to explore the ins and outs of these instruments and the many styles of music associated with them.
Raj has taught a wide range of students and specializes in Blues, Rock & Roll, Funk, Reggae, Pop & Hip-Hop. Raj's lessons emphasize ear training, music theory and history, creativity and fun.
Raj continues to enjoy learning about music history and cultural context, as well as the technical and mechanical aspects of the instruments and the procedures involved in recording. Raj has worked as a sound engineer for musical and theatrical performances at cultural festivals across the United States and Canada.
